Chile Earthquake First Responders: Students and the Social Web

Graduate students at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) have spent the last few weeks learning that technology and the social web can be the most powerful tools in crisis relief.

Armed with laptops, Google earth and a powerful crowd sourcing platform called Ushahidi, a handful of students working in intervals of two hours have been able to track and locate collapsed buildings, needs for items such as water and help first responders target key locations in post-earthquake Chile.
